(Written Test)

Candidates are required to answer the questions in their own words as far as practicable. Figures in the margin indicate the full marks.

Time: 3 hrs.                                                                                         Full Marks: 75

Attempt all the questions.

1.       Read the following text answer the questions that follow. (5×1=5)

I recently experienced a parent's worst nightmare. One evening my nine week old baby developed an extremely high fever. We rushed to our local community hospital and were admitted through the emergency department to the pediatric unit. We were discharged three days later. Thanks to the skilled doctors and nurses who cared for our precious little one. While our infant's care and health outcomes were fantastic, our experience was less than satisfactory.

During my hospital stay, many staff took the opportunity to bad-mouth their colleagues to me when we were alone. I am not sure if this occurred because I looked rather trust-worthy or they wanted to let me know they were more competent than their colleagues. The emergency nurses complained about the doctors' orders and the delay in response of the pediatric nurses. The pediatric nurses complained about the emergency room nurses' inability to get intravenous line. The pediatrician complained about orders made by the emergency doctor. Once admitted, our pediatric nurse complained about the pediatricians' approach to the care of my baby. Then the pediatrician complained about the pediatric nurse's lack of ability to obtain a urine sample.

(a)    Why was the baby taken to the hospital?

(b)    Which department was the baby admitted?

(c)    Why did the staff speak ill of their friends?

(d)    What complaint did the pediatric nurses make about emergency nurses?

(e)    How is the environment of the hospital?

4.   Read the following text and do the task.                                        15

Have you ever heard of great auks? They are flightless penguins about half the height of humans. Although very agile under water, they have been described as having a clumsy and rather awkward way of carrying themselves on land. These peculiar birds established one of their biggest breeding grounds on Funk Island, in Newfoundland. Chances are that you have never seen one - and you never will, since great auks became extinct in 1844 when the last two members of the species were killed. Unfortunately, the fate of the great auk is not unique: a staggering on million species are threatened with extinction worldwide. At least 842 species of plants, fungi and animals are at risk in Canada alone. This is about the total number of bee species and four times the number of mammal species that exist in Canada. It is 842; too many.

Great auks went extinct before we could document their behaviour. We can only glimpse their existence through the journals of travellers. Counts of threatened species often mask what we are really at risk of losing; unique life forms and their complex interactions could disappear before we even have a chance to study and understand them. In Canada, that's 842 species, each with singular physical attributes, funny behaviours or impressive cognitive skills.

What can we do about it? While biodiversity conservation specialists work actively on protecting threatened species and their habitats, we believe that studying behaviour in endangered and non-threatened species is also essential.

Researchers working on endangered species often use behavioural measurements to monitor animals' health with minimal disturbance (for instance, without having to collect tissues, remove animals from their habitat or euthanize individuals for research purposes). Health problems can be detected by observing changes in behaviour or abnormal behaviours, which happens frequently in animals experiencing chronic stress, infected by diseases or suffering from malnutrition. Changes in behaviour often precede reproductive disorders, death and population decline. Studying animal behaviour therefore allows us to detect problems at an early stage and act quickly to solve them.

Subject: Addressing the Challenges Faced by Nepali Farmers

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to bring attention to the ongoing challenges faced by Nepali farmers due to the lack of essential agricultural inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, and pesticides. Every year, farmers struggle to obtain these necessities, which severely affects crop yields and their livelihoods. Despite agriculture being the backbone of our economy, insufficient government support and poor distribution systems have left farmers helpless.

During the farming season, many farmers are unable to obtain essential resources on time, leading to poor crop yields. The lack of proper irrigation systems forces them to depend on unpredictable rainfall, while the high cost and unavailability of fertilizers and pesticides further worsen their situation. This not only impacts their income but also threatens food security in the country.

To address these issues, I would like to suggest a few measures. First, the government should ensure timely distribution of subsidized seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides to farmers. Second, investment in modern irrigation systems and water management techniques is crucial to reduce dependency on rainfall. Third, awareness programs and training should be conducted to educate farmers about sustainable farming practices and the efficient use of resources. Lastly, cooperatives and local organizations should be strengthened to provide collective support to farmers.

I urge the concerned authorities to take immediate action to solve these problems and support our hardworking farmers. I hope this issue will be highlighted in your esteemed newspaper. It is high time we prioritize the needs of our farmers and take concrete steps to improve their conditions. I hope this letter encourages the concerned authorities to act promptly.

Yours sincerely,

Dev Prasad Pandit
